Gorse is a spiny evergreen shrub introduced from Europe that is invasive in parts of the Pacific Northwest, California, the Northeast, and Hawaii. It forms dense, impenetrable thickets that displace native plants and restrict wildlife movement. Gorse produces abundant seeds that can remain viable in the soil for decades. Its highly flammable foliage and structure significantly increase wildfire risk in invaded areas.
