French Broom

(Genista monspessulana)

French broom is a woody shrub introduced from the Mediterranean region that is invasive in the western United States, especially along the West Coast. It colonizes grasslands, roadsides, forests, and coastal areas, forming dense stands that displace native vegetation. The plant produces large quantities of long-lived seeds, making infestations persistent and difficult to control. French broom also increases fire risk due to its dense, woody growth.
